This specimen was lot 30397 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof "St. Adalbert's Martyrdom" 200 Zlotych 1997 PR70 Ultra Cameo NGC, Warsaw mint. A perfect example of this artistic commemorative with eye-catching stippled texture in the outer ring on the eagle side. A highly valued type in the Standard Catalog of World Coins." Poland obtained her freedom in the early 1990's with the fall of the Berlin Wall but the new government found the treasury as empty as before. NCLT's ("Non Circulating Legal Tender" coinage) were issued in a bewildering array to help stem the flow. This one honors the martyrdom of St. Adalbert of Prague (d. 997, Wojciech in Polish), missionary to the Prussians while they were still pagans. The execution scene shown in the right obverse field is taken from the Gniezno Doors panel.
