Pisa 1605 tallero Dav-4186
This specimen was lot 1542 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Pisa Ferdinando I. de Medici, 1587-1608. Tallero 1605, Pisa. Geharnischte Büste mit Strahlenkrone und Zepter rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen auf Kreuz. Zainende. Sehr schön- fast vorzüglich. (Italy, city of Pisa, Ferdinand of Medici, 1587-1608, tallero of 1605. Obverse: armored bust with radiate crown and scepter, facing right. Reverse: Cronwed arms over a cross. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
Pisa, after a long career as an independent city state in the Middle Ages, fell under Florentine domination in Renaissance times. After the Florentine republic collapsed, Pisa became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in the SCWC for 1601-08 and is probably the same as Dav-8392.
