This specimen was lot 21242 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it sold for $____. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Pisa. Doppia, 1647. Ferdinand II De' Medici (1620-70). NGC VF-25." Pisa, after a long career as an independent city state in the Middle Ages, fell under Florentine domination in Renaissance times. After the Florentine republic collapsed, Pisa became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in the SCWC for 1641-55.
