Mantua (1519-40) ducat Fr-525
This specimen was lot 21224 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Mantua (Mantova). Ducato, ND. Mantua Ducato of Frederica II Gonzaga. Frederico II Gonzaga (1519-40). RARE. Although it mentions evidence of mounting on the holder, we are unable to locate evidence of such. Nice strike, good surfaces. NGC XF Details--Mount Removed." Federico II Gonzaga is generally remembered today for his patronage of Titian and Raphael, both of whom painted his portrait before he died of syphilis, aged 40 years. The Gonzaga family managed to hold onto some autonomy as dukes of Mantua until its extinction in 1707, when the duchy fell to the Austrians.
