Pisa 1595 tallero Dav-8392
This specimen was lot 24329 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pisa. Ferdinando I Tallero 1595, AU53 NGC, original silvery-gray toning with bold details, the planchet is a bit crude as usual for this early series. Very scarce in this quality." Pisa, after a long career as an independent city state in the Middle Ages, fell under Florentine domination in Renaissance times. After the Florentine republic collapsed, Pisa became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in Davenport for 1595 and 1600. It is probably the same type as Dav-4186.
