SB124-56514 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 56514 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pfalz. 1/2 Kreuzer, 1802. Mannheim Mint. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details." The electorate of the Palatinate, established in the eleventh century, comprised the Lower Palatinate along the Rhine (capital Heidelberg) and the Upper Palatinate, north of Bavaria. Eventually, the elector succeeded to the throne of Bavaria, unifying the two provinces in 1777. The territories on the left bank of the Rhine were seized by France in 1795. When the Holy Roman Empire was abolished in 1805, the remnants were partitioned between Bavaria and Baden. This rare type, accompanied by a one kreuzer, is just about the last issue for the state before it was dissolved.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-493; AKS-27; Witt-2610.
