Künker sale 293, lot 158
Bavaria before and after Napoleon

This specimen was lot 158 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,826 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. Konv.-Taler 1802, für die Rheinpfalz. Kopf r. darunter die Stempelschneidersignatur B (Hans Heinrich Boltshauser)//Gekröntes, dreifeldiges Wappen über Palm- und Lorbeerzweig. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön +. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian IV Joseph, 1799-1825, convention thaler of 1802, for the Palatinate. Obverse: head right, engraver's signature below; reverse: crowned threefold arms with palm and laurel branches. Of the greatest rarity, handsome patina, some planchet defects, very fine or better.)"

This very rare issue was struck in Mannheim for the Palatinate but is filed under Bavaria by Davenport. Here at the Wiki, we can file it under both. The Palatinate was seized and partitioned between France and Baden in 1795 (western part) and 1803 (eastern part) and Bavaria received only part of it back by the Congress of Vienna (see map).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW, 42 mm diameter, this specimen 27,70 g.
