Pfalz (1767) ducat Fr-2039
This specimen was lot 40248 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pfalz (Palatinate). Lottery Ducat, ND. Mannheim Mint. Karl Theodor (1742-99). NGC AU-58. Obverse: Mailed bust right, titles around, 'HOC AVSPICE' below; Reverse: Nude Fortuna with sail stands on globe, 'SORS INDUSTRIAE, HAEC FAVENTE' around, 'HAC FAVENTE' below. The so-called "Lottery Ducat", struck on the occasion of the founding of the Mannheim lottery. Choice quality for this seldom seen issue, with highly reflective properties in the fields, well struck designs and pleasing tone throughout. A few instances of handling, none seriously detrimental to the appearance, determine the AU-58 grade, the highest thus far given to this type by NGC or PCGS."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-2039; KM-424 (formerly KM-130).
