Peru 1924 sol

This one sol was struck in Philadelphia in 1924 for Peru. It is distinguished from pieces minted in Lima, which have larger sized letters in the legend. This 0.500 fine silver coin replaced a .900 fine silver one sol struck in large numbers 1865-1916. This type was issued until 1935, when all silver was removed from the coinage. The examples shown is the 1924/824 variety overdate. The second specimen was lot 73586 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Sol, 1924. Lima Mint. NGC AU-58. Variety with large letters. Only lightly handled and most attractive, this wholesome specimen yields a soft brilliance and limited instances of handling on the surfaces."

Specification: 25 g, 0.500 fine silver, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: the first specimen is KM 218.1 (small letters). the second specimen is KM-218.2 (large letters).
