Peru 1916 sol rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen shown is one of a sub-type struck only in 1916, but using the basic design used 1864-1896 and again from 1914-1916 at the Lima mint for Peru. There are many varieties and subtypes of this basic design. This particular variety has LIBERTAD struck in relief rather than incuse (KM 196.27). After 1916, the silver fineness was reduced to 0.500, though the same design elements persisted until 1935. The second specimen was lot 72193 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Sol, 1916-LIMA FG. PCGS MS-65. Incuse 'LIBERTAD' on obverse. This Gem stands apart from other examples, even within this high grade, thanks to its gorgeous rosy toning with a full palette of subdued sunset hues. A mesmerizing piece to admire in-hand. From the Pat Johnson Collection."

Recorded mintage: 1,927,000.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 0.7234 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 196.28. The second specimen is KM-196.27.
