The specimen shown was struck in Peru as an experimental imitation of the contemporary Spanish peseta of the same weight and fineness. History does not reveal why this coinage was felt to be necessary as the Lima mint was simultaneously striking the quinto de sol, also of the same weight and fineness. One may note that 1880 was in the midst of the War of the Pacific and Lima was occupied by Chilean troops. In any event, the experiment does not seem to have been a success, as no other dates are known from Lima. This date comes with and without a dot after the date; this specimen shows the dot.
