The specimen shown was struck in Brussels for Peru in 1879 as a replacement for the normal silver half dinero during the War of the Pacific against Chile and for a mass of depreciated paper notes. Similar copper-nickel ten and twenty centavos were also emitted. The issue of the silver half dinero, which ceased in 1864, resumed on a regular basis in 1890 and continued until 1917.
