The specimen shown was struck in Brussels for Peru, in 1879-80 as a replacement for the normal silver dinero during the War of the Pacific against Chile. Similar copper-nickel five and twenty centavos were also emitted. The issue of the silver dinero, which ceased in 1877, resumed on a regular basis in 1888 and continued until 1917.

Recorded mintage: 3,005,000.
