This specimen was lot 72298 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Sol, 1880-YJ. Lima Mint. NGC MS-62+. A frosty and mostly argent crown, this elegant example offers solid brilliance and exhibits just a hint of champagne toning at the edges." This type was struck in 1880 with numerous varieties (KM 196.5 Type III, Letters R B on stems flanking date, 196.6 Letters R B on ribbon of wreath and 3 berries in bunch, 196.7 3 berries in bunch, 196.8 Without extra letters, 2 berries in bunch, 196.29 Without extra letters on stem, 3 berries) so minor that the auctioneers did not bother to attribute this example. We think it is KM 129.29 as the obverse shows only a "B" on the pedestal and no letters on the stems of the wreath on the reverse. One may note that 1880 was in the midst of the War of the Pacific and Lima was occupied by Chilean troops.

Recorded Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 196.
