Peru 1859-YB 50 centavos
This fifty centavos piece was one of a series of coins issued to move Peru into decimal coinage. It replaced the four reales familiar since colonial times and was, in turn, replaced by the half sol. It is relatively uncommon and a two-year issue. The second example shown was lot 26094 and sold on Apr 18, 2011 for $207 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description notes: "Republic 50 Centavos 1859-YB, AU50 ANACS. Small R.B. initials of designer beneath shield. Hair in bun with ponytail. Lovely old toning. From The Dana Roberts Collection."
