This fifty centimos piece was one of a series of coins issued to move Peru into decimal coinage. It replaced the four reales familiar since colonial times and was, in turn, replaced by the half sol. It is relatively uncommon and a one year type, issued simultaneously with a short-lived fifty centavos. The standing liberty design, derived from the eight reales of 1841-57, also appears on a half real of 1858.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 0.1808 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 178.
