This fifty centavos piece was one of a series of coins issued to move Peru into decimal coinage. It replaced the four reales familiar since colonial times and was, in turn, replaced by the half sol. It is relatively uncommon and a two-year issue. 1858 saw the issue of this type, and the 1858-MB 50 centimos.
