Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72696

This specimen was lot 72696 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,260. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/2 Escudo, 1833-LIMA MM. Lima Mint. PCGS AU-58. A wondrous example of a fairly SCARCE type, this specimen is about as close to Mint State status as one can get, offering an enchanting golden hue, solid centering, and excellent detail remaining." This type was struck at Lima 1826-33, 1836-42, 1850-51 and 1856. It has a modest price in the SCWC for a gold coin but is seldom seen. This example realized over triple the catalog value.
