This specimen was lot 22183 in Heritage Auctions sale 3005 (Long Beach, May 2009), where it sold for $299. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1831-MM Lima, MS62 NGC, lovely old-time toning with a superb reverse. This piece ...[was] discovered last year in a wall in Europe." The white bumps shown in the photos are the plastic tabs on NGC's new holder. This type was struck at Lima 1828-40 and at Cuzco 1830-35 and is the most common; the complete span of Peru standing liberty eight reales runs 1825-55. Assayer JM is also recorded for 1831 but is much rarer.
