This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1814-21. It is the only half escudo struck in Peru in colonial times. This specimen was lot 3521 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "1818 JP 1/2 escudo. Lima mint. MS-62 (NGC). Laureated head of Fernando VII to right, legends around, date below/arms surrounded by garter, assayer and mintmark on either side. Deep yellow gold, traces of lustre remaining. A scarce little coin. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
