Peru 1787-L MI 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72099 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1787-L. Lima Mint; Assayers Manuel de Iglesia Abarca & Ignacio Zenon de Galvez (M I). Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. While the surfaces of this 4 Reales piece have been lightly cleaned to a uniform matte finish, they retain abundant detail, aided by the attractive toning that adds dramatic shadow in the protected areas. The result is a pleasing example of the type, with much eye appeal to offer the collector. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex. Kagin's 1983 ANA sale, August 1983, lot 1078." This type is listed for Peru 1772-89 and is quite scarce, even without mentioning the famous "GARTIA" error for 1775. Assayer MI is listed for 1780-87. The fineness was lowered from .903 to .896 in 1785.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver.
