Aureo sale 238, lot 152

This specimen was lot 152 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 460 euro (about US$730 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1784. Lima. MI. 8 reales. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. EBC-/EBC (eight reales of 1784, Lima mint. Nice, lustrous, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1772-89 for Charles III and supplanted the pillar dollar. A slight debasement accompanied the design change. Assayer MI is recorded for 1780-87.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
