Peru 1756-L JM 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72069 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1756-LM. Lima Mint; Assayers Joseph Rodriguez de Carrasa & Manuel de Iglesia Abarca (J M). Ferdinand VI. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, AU Details. This 4 Reales piece is quite individual thanks to the multitude of chopmarks upon its central devices. A testament to this coin's circulation in East Asia, these marks are scattered haphazardly over both the obverse and reverse. Looking beyond the chopmarks, it's evident that the piece was lightly handled, as its surviving devices are sharp and clear. An attractive pewter-gray tone complements this distinct and memorable coin. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck 1752-1760 for king Ferdinand VI. As a class, pillar coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, though it is more available than the remaining mints.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver.
