Sincona sale 9, lot 4802

This specimen was lot 4802 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 2800 CHF (about US$3,541 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PERU Fernando VI. 1746-1760. 8 Escudos 1752. Assayer J. Kl. Schrötlingsf. Vorzüglich. (Peru, Ferdinand VI, 1746-59, eight escudos of 1752. A few flaws, extremely fine.)"

This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1752. This type was struck 1751-53 and represents the first milled gold coinage from the Lima mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown. The SCWC prices this type lower than its successors until the Charles III "standard bust" type of 1772-89.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW, this specimen 27,10 g.
