Peru 1753-L J 8 escudos
This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1753. This type was struck 1751-53 and represents the first milled gold coinage from the Lima mint. The first specimen was lot 3468 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1753 J 8 escudos. Lima mint. MS-63 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold with deeper highlights and reflectivity in the fields. The lustre remains full on the reverse and is almost intact on the obverse, making this far finer than typical specimens of this type. Nicely struck with only light marks. An exemplary Lima 8 escudos, finer than the Karon coin and most seen. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
The second specimen was lot 24843 in Heritage sale 3016 (Orlando, FL, January 2012), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1753J, AU55 NGC, even light circulation and good appeal for this scarce type 8 Escudos."
Recorded mintage: unknown. The SCWC prices this type lower than its successors until the Charles III "standard bust" type of 1772-89.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 27.04 grams, 36.50 mm diameter.
