Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 47

This specimen was lot 47 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $3,332. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 1 escudo, 1746/4V, NGC AU 55. Very bold full strike on both sides set off with dark toning, the L-V and 746 particularly prominent and clearly showing the overdate, surely the finest known at NGC but missing in the census." The type was struck in Lima, Peru, 1701-44. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer V is listed for 1740-47. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: S-L30; KM-35 (unlisted date); CT-476, Cayón-unlisted.
