This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type issued 1710-46. Assayer V is known for 1739-47. This specimen was lot 21281 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Escudos, 1746-L V. Philip V (1700-46). NGC MS-62. Dots in field variety. Single finest certified at NGC, none at PCGS. The fabled 'doubloon' of the pirates of the Caribbean. A highly attractive example of this ever popular type. Good strike on a rather compact flan with a full cross on the reverse. Lustrous and with quite good eye appeal."
