Aureo sale 242, lot 173

The specimen shown was lot 173 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 5,500 € (about US$8,539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Felipe V (1700-1746). 1742. Lima. V. 8 escudos. Rev.: L-8-V/P-V-A/7-4-2. Preciosa pátina. Rara. MBC+/EBC-. (Philip V (1700-46), eight escudos of 1742, Lima mint. Nice toning, rare, very fine plus.)"

This eight escudos was struck during the second reign of Philip V. Milled gold coinage commenced in 1751.

Reported Mintage: 78,386.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz ASW.
