Peru 1734-L N 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 37 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $7,735. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 8 escudos, 1734N, NGC MS 62, finest known in NGC census. Rather small, thick flan with superb full cross-lions-castles and full pillars (all well centered), lustrous surfaces, no legends except for bottom of 734 of second date." The type was struck in Lima, Peru, 1701-44. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer N is listed for 1728-39. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
