This specimen was lot 72684 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob 8 Reales, 1728-L N. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, EF Details. This cob owes its slightly lighter weight and rough surface finish to its previous saltwater submersion, but the coin's denomination, assayer, and all-important date remain delightfully crisp. An appealing example for any collector seeking the date. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This type was struck for Philip V 1726-47. In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. Assayer Negron y Colmenares stamped his coins 1728-38. The cobs were debased from 0.931 to 0.917 fine in 1728.
