This specimen was lot 28 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $14,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 8 escudos, 1724 M, NGC XF 45. Round flan with tiny edge-split, bold full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, well centered but doubled on last digit of date." Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. This type is recorded for 1710-47 with assayer M operating 1710-27. Cobs were struck at Lima until 1752, twenty years after Mexico City had switched to milled coinage.
