This specimen was lot 72682 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob 8 Reales, 1720-L M. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS VF-35. Featuring a deep tone and fairly detailed strike, this cob makes a charming representative. The central date is somewhat muddled but just legible enough, while other design elements appear with satisfying clarity. The coin was only moderately handled and evaded any post-mint damage, resulting in a handsome coin overall. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This type was struck for Philip V 1701-24. Assayer M is reported for 1709-28. The cobs were debased from 0.931 to 0.917 fine in 1728.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 26.68 g.
