Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74614
SB1025-74614r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74614 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. "Royal" Presentation Cob 2 Reales, 1718-L M. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Holed, VF Details. A handsome and quite RARE 'Royal' minor from the Lima mint. The exceptionally broad and round planchet allows for an unobstructed view of the central devices on both sides, including two clear three-digit dates. The hole at 9 o'clock is a typical feature of these issues, and may account for the coin's slightly reduced weight. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1701-28 for Philip V with an interruption in 1725 for the short reign of Luis I. "Royals" were struck for presentation and the survivors are nearly always holed. Assayer M stamped his coins 1709-27. In 1728, the cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine silver. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 6.00 g.
