Ponterio sale 150, lot 8690

This coin was lot 8690 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $14,375. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Escudos, (1)708-H. EXTREMELY RARE date, unpublished and not present in the state of Florida collection. Possibly UNIQUE. Ex: '1715 Plate Fleet;' Ex: Ponterio Auction #146, lot #1072, where it realized $16,100. Traces of ocean encrustation. Lustrous, nearly MINT STATE." The type was struck in Lima, Peru, 1702-45; the date 1708 is listed for one, two and eight escudos cobs. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer H is recorded for 1696-1709.
