Penang 1809 cent KM-11
This specimen was lot 1586 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALAY STATES: Penang: Emergency Coinage, tin cent (pice) 1809, uniface, initials A&C in cursive script (for James Anderson and William Clubley, two British officials), date below, countermarked with Chinese character "mei" (meaning beautiful), bold letters, lovely glossy fields, the rarest of the three types of Penang emergency tin coinage, XF, RRR." This type was struck in 1809 while Penang was a trading station of the East India Company and is rare. The auctioneers attributed this to KM 10 but the sketch for KM 10 shows a square hole, missing in this example. Later issues were struck for the Straits Settlements, centered on Singapore.
