Sincona sale 77, lot 2650

This specimen was lot 2650 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$364 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Parma. Ferdinando di Borbone, 1765-1802. Ducato argento 1784, Parma. Sehr selten. Schön-sehr schön. Stempelriss. (Italy, duchy of Parma, Ferdinand of Bourbon, 1765-1802, silver ducat of 1784, Parma mint. Very rare, Fine-very fine, Die crack.)"

This coin is listed in the SCWC as a ducaton (32.78 g, 0.917 fine) but more closely matches the silver ducat (28.25 g, 0.875 fine). It is a rare one year type. Ferdinand (1751-1802) ruled Parma from 1765 until March 1801, when he was forced to surrender his domain to the French. His son Louis (1773-1803) was briefly king of Etruria (1801-03), a French puppet state. Louis' son Charles Louis (1799-1883) regained the throne of Parma in 1847.
