Paraguay 1978 70000 guaranies
The first specimen was lot 31094 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Paraguay: Republic gold Proof "Alfredo Stroessner" 70000 Guaranies 1978 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. The single highest certified of this modern Proof rarity at either NGC or PCGS. 300 of this large denomination type were struck, but the vast majority were melted in the 1990s leaving only a few available to collectors today, of which this may well be the finest. A flawless, virtually unimprovable copper-gold premium gem." The second specimen was lot 31149 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[2] noted, "Paraguay: Republic gold Proof "Alfredo Stroessner" 70000 Guaranies 1983 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. Celebrating Stroessner's 6th term as president, this large issue is on the cusp of perfection and is the single-finest example certified by either grading company. From the Paramount Collection." This bust was used on other commemorative coinage issued by the regime, such as a 300 guaranies of 1968 (KM 29) and a 10,000 guaranies of 1973 (KM 30). Many of the commemoratives issued during the seventies are so rare that they are not pictured in the SCWC. The peso was dropped in favor of the guarani in 1944.
