Paraguay 1973 300 guaranies
This silver 300 guaranies was struck for Paraguay in 1973. It honors one of the numerous re-elections of President and dictator Alfredo Stroessner (1912-2006), who ruled Paraguay 1954-89. Among his tactics in dealing with opponents was to drop them out of airplanes into the trackless wastes of the Gran Chaco. This bust was used on other commemorative coinage issued by the regime, such as a 10,000 guaranies of 1968 (KM 30) and a 300,000 guaranies of 1988 (KM 174). Many of the commemoratives issued during the seventies are so rare that they are not pictured in the SCWC, but this one is common. The peso was dropped in favor of the guarani in 1944.
Recorded mintage: 250,000.
Specification: 28.6 g, 0.720 fine silver, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM 29.
