Paraguay 1976 guarani
This specimen was part of lot 51354 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), which sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "PARAGUAY. Gold Proof Set (2 Pieces), 1976. Rio de Janeiro Mint. CHOICE PROOF. Mintage: 10 (purported for both pieces). FAO series. 1) 10 Guaranies. Fr-Unlisted; KM-153A; Pratt-MP3. 2) Guarani. An EXTREMELY RARE pairing given their paltry mintage figures, these gold strikings present an incredible opportunity for the collector of Latin American or world gold more broadly. Includes original box of issue and certificate of authenticity." This type was struck for circulation in 1975-76; the gold pieces were doubtless struck for presentation to insiders. This is not the FAO issue (KM 165), which has the legend "ALIMENTOS PARA EL MUNDO" added to the reverse.
Recorded mintage: 12,000,000 plus 1,000 proofs plus est. 10 in gold.
Specification: circulation issue: 2.9 g, stainelss steel, 18 mm diameter; presentation issue: 6.99 g, gold.
Catalog reference: stainless steel: KM 151; gold: Fr-Unlisted; KM-151a; Pratt-MP2.
