Paraguay 1974 1500 guaranies Fr-18
This specimen was lot 76786 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "PARAGUAY. 1500 Guaranies, 1974. Stuttgart Mint. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. A stunning nearly perfect exemplar, with sharp cameo contrast and strong eye appeal." The Krupp mint in Stuttgart struck an extensive series of gold coins for the regime in 1974, featuring Alessandro Manzoni, Abraham Lincoln, Ludwig van Beethoven, Otto von Bismarck, Albert Einsein, Giuseppe Garibaldi, William Tell, John F Kennedy, Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, pope John XXIII and pope Paul VI, none of whom ever set foot in Paraguay. Many of the commemoratives issued during the seventies are so rare that they are not pictured in the SCWC. Dictator Alfredo Stroessner was better known for having his enemies throw out of airplanes high over the Pantanal.
