Paraguay 1870 4 centesimos
This type was struck 1870 at the Heaton mint for Paraguay, accompanied by one and two centesimos. Paraguay, utterly ruined by the War of the Triple Alliance, could not afford additional coinage and other than some restrikes of these coins made in Asuncion, no more coins were issued until 1889. The Heaton issue is distinguished from the local product by the presence of the engraver's name "SHAW" near the date. The second specimen was lot 21277 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "PARAGUAY. 4 Centesimos, 1870. Asuncion Mint. PCGS AU-50. Far RARER than the Birmingham issues, this Asuncion issue delivers a full strike and charming details. Limitedly circulated and entirely attractive, this wholesome and problem free example provides much appeal and charm to any specialist in the series."
