Papal States 1762 zecchino Fr-237
This type was struck 1760-62 for Clement XIII (1758-69) and is among the more common of papal ducats. It is accompanied by a half ducat (Fr-238). The second specimen was lot 31191 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Clement XIII gold Zecchino 1762//IV MS63 NGC, Rome mint. A decidedly choice representation of the type, with extremely lustrous surfaces and a radiating appeal. A few lightly scattered hairlines are evident around Holy Mother Church, but the piece remains worthy of intense focus and an elite bid." The third specimen was lot 2844 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$779 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY | Vatican - Church State, Clemens XIII. 1758-1769. Zecchino 1762 / Anno IV, Roma. NGC AU58." The fourth specimen was lot 2729 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$808 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"ITALIEN Vatikan - Kirchenstaat, Clemens XIII. 1758-1769. Zecchino 1762 / Anno IV, Roma. Berman 2890. NGC AU58. (Italy, Papal States, Clement XIII, 1758-69, zecchino of 1762 (year 4), Rome mint. About uncirculated.)"
