Papal States 1754 scudo Dav-1459
This specimen was lot 3564 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$371 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VATIKAN / KIRCHENSTAAT Benedetto XIV. 1740-1758. Scudo 1754, AN XIV. Gutes sehr schön-sehr schön. (Papal States, Benedict XIV, 1740-58, scudo of 1754, year XIV, good very fine.)"
Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1753-54 and is reasonably available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 26.42 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.20 g.
