Papal States (1757) scudo Dav-1461
This specimen was lot 2192 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Papal/Roman States. Scudo of 9 Giulii (Four Lire), Anno XVII (17. Bologna mint. Benedict XIV, 1740-1758. Capped bust right. Reverse: Seven line inscription. PATRIA / ET / PRINCIPI. / SENATUS / MAGNIFICE / AVCTO / S.P.Q.B. Commemorates the expansion of the University of Bologna. A lovely original example with original mint bloom and attractive old cabinet tone. Very Rare. NGC graded MS-63." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is dismissed as a medal by the SCWC and is not included therein.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 26.42 g, 0.917 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-1461; Ber-2803; CNI-102; KM-M3 (Medallic Issue).
