Papal St 1738 scudo doro rev Heritage 3024-25001.jpg

This specimen was lot 25001 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Clement XII gold Scudo d'Oro 1738 Anno VIII, MS65 NGC, fully lustrous with exceptionally bold details, a choice example with strong eye appeal." We are a little hazy about the distinction between the ducat (called the zecchino in the Papal States) and the scudo d'oro, a gold coin of the same weight and fineness. We will let the reader decide.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, .996 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-220, KM 887, Ber-2609.
