Papal States 1739 zecchino Fr-222
The first specimen was lot 1275 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 750 euro (about US$1,154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Clément XII (1730-1740), AV zecchino, 1739, Rome. Droit : L'Eglise sur une nuée, tenant les clés de saint Pierre et une maquette d'église. Revers : L'écu du Pape sous la colombe de l'Esprit Saint. Superbe. (Italy, Papal States, Clement XII (1730-40), gold zecchino of 1739, Rome mint. Obverse: the holy mother church seated on a cloud, in one hand the keys of St. Peter and a church steeple in the other; reverse: the arms of the Pope below the dove of the Holy Spirit. Extremely fine.)"
This scarce type is listed for 1738-39 and was the first zecchino issued since 1730. The second and third specimens are undated.
