Künker sale 403, lot 1322

This specimen was lot 1322 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €320 (about US$420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SEDISVAKANZ 1559. Die Münzstätte Rom. Triplice Giulio (Testone) 1559, Rom. Mit Rosette als Mantelschnalle und dem Münzzeichen C in Kreuzglobus (Girolamo Ceuli) auf der Rückseite. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (Papal States, sede vacante of 1559, triple giulio or testone of 1559, Rome mint. With a rosette as cloak brooch and mintmark C in an orb on the reverse. Small planchet defects, very fine.)"

This is a very early testone but not the first. While regular papal coinage was either not dated or bore regnal years, sede vacante coinage usually had the AD date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,00 g.
