The Bologna mint began issuing gold for the popes during the reign of Urban VI (1378-89) and continued until Pius VI (1774-99). This scudo d'oro of Paul IV (1555-59) is rather scarce. This specimen was lot 24224 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Scudo d'Oro, ND. Bologna Mint. Paul IV (1555-59). NGC EF-45. A VERY SCARCE issue. A few weak spots, but overall a wholesome problem free example sure to please."
