Künker sale 403, lot 1424

This specimen was lot 1424 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XI., 1676-1689. Die Münzstätte Rom. Grosso o. J. (um 1681), Rom. St. Petrus mit kreisförmigem Nimbus. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, undated grosso, circa 1681, Rome mint. Obverse: St. Peter with circular nimbus. Cabinet example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The grosso was the second smallest silver coin, being one half of a giulio or one sixth of a testone. It was minted rather erratically; in addition to the type shown here, we see KM 476, dated 1686.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.57 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 1,62 g.
