Künker sale 403, lot 1425

This specimen was lot 1425 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XI., 1676-1689. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Grosso o. J. (um 1681), Rom. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Klaus Bronny, Auktion Münzen & Medaillen Deutschland 26, Stuttgart 2008, Nr. 455. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, undated half grosso, circa 1681, Rome mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

The mezzo grosso was the smallest silver coin, being one quarter of a giulio or one twelfth of a testone. It was minted rather erratically but this pontiff seemed to like them; in addition to the type shown here, we see KM 379, KM 380, KM 381 with the bust of St. Paul, KM 383 (Lateran issue), and KM 459, KM 460, KM 461, KM 462, KM 463, KM 464 (inscription on reverse).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.76 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 0,73 g.
